One tool for assessing the impat of HIV/AIDS interventions in an institutionalized and sustained HIV surveillance system. In the African region, an active HIV sero-surveillance sentinal system using prenant women attending antenatal clinics as the survey population is employed. Findings from these surveys show that HIV prevalence in Nigeria has been on a consistant increase from 1/8% (1991) to 5.8% (2001). The national median prevalence for the 2003 survey is 5.0%.
