In recent years, cost-benefit analysis has been aplied to evaluate the financial implications of family planning programs in numerous countries. The financial cost-benefit analysis compares the monetary cost of the family planning program to the monetary benefits in terms of reduced levels of social services required at lower levels of fertility. Such a study was conducted for Egypt in 1996 and the results of that study have been utlized extensively to support a strong public family planning program in Egypt. Because the original study was conducted 8 years ago, a new study was carried out in 2004 to reflect the current situation. The main purpose of this paper is to discuss the results of this study and to compare them with results from the original Egypt study and studies from other countries.
