The POLICY Project in Viet Nam has recently received official registration from the government of Viet Nam. The aim of POLICY Project in Viet Nam, in partnership with USAID, is to support the government and people of Viet Nam in their response to the HIV/AIDS epidemic. Activities for 2003-2004 focus on building capacity for evidence-based HIV/AIDS policy development and supporting and strengthening the role of people living with HIV/AIDS within the framework of the Greater Involvement of People Living with HIV/AIDS (GIPA) principle.

POLICY activities include a series of research projects concerning Viet Nam's HIV/AIDS-related human rights obligations, the role of the media in reporting HIV/AIDS, and the implementation of the GIPA principle in the HIV/AIDS policy process. In addition, POLICY is collaborating with USAID, the government of Viet Nam, and other partners to support greater access to antiretroviral treatment and to develop a comprehensive approach to injecting drug use and HIV prevention and care.

:: Recent Successes
With POLICY financial and technical support, the Therapy Department of the MOH drafted the "National ARV and Opportunistic Infections (OI) Guidelines for Viet Nam," signed by the Vice Minister and promulgated on March 7, 2005. POLICY helped disseminate the guidelines through two national workshops in June 2005 attended by over 200 participants, representing leading HIV/AIDS treatment institutions, directors of provincial health and therapy services, and international donors interested in strengthening the capacity of Vietnamese HIV/AIDS physicians and centers administering ARV and OI treatment.
