POLICY/ASICAL Training Promotes Men’s Health in Latin America
February 6, 2003 The POLICY Project, in collaboration with the ASICAL network, recently sponsored a training workshop on Advocacy Strategies for HIV/AIDS Prevention and Care Services focusing on men’s health. The training took place in Quito, Ecuador, from January 26–31, 2003 at the Radisson Royal Quito Hotel. Thirteen countries within the Latin American region and 18 NGOs were represented at this training. The training was a great example of how representatives from civil society were able to work together on the development of advocacy strategies and exchange experiences with officials from various ministries of health.
Some of the topics featured were:
- The state of the HIV/AIDS epidemic in Latin America;
- What is advocacy;
- The steps for political advocacy;
- Designing a plan for advocacy;
- Financing advocacy programs;
- Political mapping;
- Building alliances and partnerships; and
- Evaluation of the process.
The general objective of this training was to provide a tool for building the local capacity of advocacy groups in Latin America and to develop and implement advocacy campaigns on human rights and citizenship in the area of HIV and AIDS. The POLICY Project’s HIV/AIDS activities are designed primarily to support awareness raising and capacity building to address key policy constraints – cultural, social, and economic – to mitigating the impact of HIV/AIDS.
A training manual on advocacy to promote men’s health for effective HIV/AIDS prevention and care will be available at the end of March 2003.
