Developing Male Involvement Guidelines in Cambodia
Forty-two percent of all new HIV infections in Cambodia are due to husband to wife transmission. This staggering figure, in addition to a low contraceptive prevalence rate and a high maternal mortality rate, has compelled Cambodia to examine how men can be included in responses to these reproductive health (RH) issues. With technical assistance from the POLICY Project, the Reproductive Health Promotion Working Group (RHPWG), a network of Cambodian nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) has been successful in engaging the government in recognizing the need for and drafting male involvement guidelines.

Nepal Police Adopt HIV/AIDS Strategy and Training Curriculum
Technical assistance funded by USAID through the POLICY Project has resulted in a significant breakthrough in Nepal’s comprehensive response to HIV/AIDS. Recently, the Nepal Police developed and adopted a five-year HIV/AIDS strategy and workplan. In April 2005, Nepal’s Inspector General of Police, Mr. Shyam Bhakta Thapa, also launched a training curriculum for officers and peacekeepers of all ranks.

POLICY Supports HIV-Positive Women’s Leadership in the Asia-Pacific Region
World AIDS Day 2004 focused on women and girls, who are increasingly vulnerable to HIV and are bearing the burden of HIV/AIDS due to fundamental inequalities existing throughout the world. The 2004 AIDS Epidemic Update by UNAIDS and WHO estimates that the number of women living with HIV/AIDS has risen in each region of the world over the past two years, with the steepest increase, 56 percent, in East Asia.

SNEHA Samaj: Giving HIV-positive Nepalese Women a Voice
Nepal’s first case of HIV was reported in 1988. Over the past 15 years, UNAIDS estimates that nearly 60,000 adults and children have become infected. Nepal is now classified as a country with a concentrated HIV/AIDS epidemic, with pervasive stigma and discrimination affecting the most at-risk groups. While several groups of HIV-positive individuals have recently been formed in the country, many Nepalese women do not feel comfortable within these organizations and, until recently, there were no groups that catered specifically to women affected and infected by HIV.

POLICY Project releases report on stigma in the workplace in Mexico
The POLICY Project and the AIDS Responsibility Project (ARP) released a report in late September on a survey they conducted on U.S.-based companies in Mexico and their response to HIV/AIDS in the workplace. Twenty of the top U.S.-based companies in Mexico, which employ nearly 300,000 people, answered questionnaires and participated in interviews as part of a program on stigma reduction in the Mexican workplace.
